Project Description

Centrale Montemartini

It hosts about 400 roman statues, together with epigraphs and mosaics in an extraordinary ambient of industrial archaeology: a thermoelectric power plant inaugurated in 1912.

Set in Rome’s first public electrical power plant, the exhibition consists of the intertwinement of classical archaeologic images and industrial ones, together with the plant’s machinery serving as a background to sculptures or vice versa, according to the points of view inside the room.

The two gigantic and now silent Diesel motors of the plant, each of which supports an exaggerated and improbable alternator, are an almost disturbing but definitely most evocative presence. They are all symbols of the century that witnessed the arrival of most of the extraordinary technologies of the modern era.
