This monument is an altar which was inaugurated on the 30th of January in 9 b.C. and it is a symbol of the peace and prosperity that were obtained as a result of the Pax Romana. This period was a long one of peace and it was imposed upon the states of the Roman Empire by Augustus, the first Roman emperor.

The altar is kept in the Museum of the Ara Pacis, inside a triumphant looking theca, which has clear references to the Roman imperial style and was designed by the American architect Richard Meier.

There are also areas dedicated to exhibitions and events inside the museum.

Augustus’s Mausoleum is very close to the Ara Pacis. It is an overpowering funeral monument which belongs to the Ist century b.C. and it is currently being restored.
