Project Description

Basilica di Santa Maria sopra Minerva

The Basilica of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, of both Gothic and Baroque styles, is close to the Pantheon.

On the 22nd June 1633, in the convent belonging to this church, the father of modern astronomy Galileo Galilei, suspected of heresy, forswore his scientific theses.

Among the many masterpieces that you can find in the Basilica, the best known is the statue of Cristo Portacroce (Christ carrying the cross) by Michelangelo.
