Project Description

Basilica of St Paul’s outside the walls

This basilica is one of the four papal basilicas of Rome and it is the second biggest after Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.

Construction started in 324, on the spot where Paul the apostle was buried. His grave is in fact under the major altar. The basilica was then perfectioned and decorated through the centuries on the order of different popes.

Starting from 1300, the first Holy Year, it has been part of the jubilar itinerary to gain plenary indulgence and it is here that you celebrate the opening of the Porta Santa.
