Project Description

Piazza del Popolo

Piazza del Popolo hosts lots of events. It is the most praised by the foreign press, thanks to its chaotic comings and goings of patrons who crowd the tables of its trendy bars and constantly fill the square with life from the early hours of the mornings, offering the tastiest breakfasts, to the later hours of the evening for lovely aperitifs.

Porta del Popolo is the main scenographic entrance which welcomes visitors with the inscription: FELICI FAUSTOQUE INGRESSUI MDCLV (For a happy and propitious entrance), created by Bernini in occasion of the visit to Rome of Queen Cristina of Sweden.

There is an Egyptian obelisk to Rameses II, which was brought to the city by Emperor Augustus, at the centre of the square. It used to stand in Circus Maximus. In 1823, Valadier added the baths and the lions. The fountains and the ramps which lead up to Pincio were put here in the same period.

In the square there also are two “twin churches” made by Bernini and the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, built on the tomb of Emperor Nero.

If you walk up to Pincio, one of the most romantic and picturesque places in the city, you can have a look at a breath taking view of Rome.
