The stations
The Roman railway hub is one of the main ones in the whole Italian rail system, as it is one of the crossroads, both for the important lines coming from other national and regional hotspots and for the High Speed system.
The main railway companies are Trenitalia and NTV (whose commercial name is Italo) and you will find timetables and destinations on their websites.
Both have high speed trains thanks to which you can reach other Italian cities in a short time. The trip to Florence takes 1h 20’, to Bologna about 2h, Milan takes less than 3h, Venice 3h 20’, Turin about 4h, Naples 1h 10’ and Salerno about 2h.
The Frecciargento high-speed trains connect daily the Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci airport with Rome, Florence, Bologna, Padua and Venice, without intermediate transfers.
The Frecciarossa 1000 of Trenitalia is the fastest train in Europe and it can travel at 400 km/h, but the maximum commercial speed is 300 km/h.
To get the best prices for fast trains, you must buy the tickets as soon as they go on special offer, which is usually four months before departure.
The High Speed train tickets don’t need to be validated as they are marked with a specific date, a specific train and a numbered seat. You just have to keep the ticket code, which can be sent to you via email, via SMS or can also be printed. This tracking number is called “Codice Biglietto” on Italo trains and “PNR” on Trenitalia tickets.
Regional train tickets are sold for a specific day. You can change the date without penalty until midnight of the day before travel.
Tickets must be validated before boarding the train, and, once validated, must be used within four hours. If you buy a regional ticket online, you have to choose a specific train, and use the ticket within four hours after the scheduled departure, and it can’t be modified for any reason. Regional tickets never sell out, and there are never any discounts for advance purchase.
The train stations have many screens, similar to the airport ones, with the time of departure, the number of the train (which is present on all the tickets of the High Speed trains) and the final destination (which can be some stops further than yours) in both Italian and English.

THE MAIN STATIONS

Roma Termini is the most important railway yard in the whole of Rome and is also the biggest in Italy, having both national and international services.
There are all kinds of rail services, from High Speed to Eurostar, from InterCity to national and international ones, including regional ones.
Roma Termini is also the Leonardo Express stop, which provides a direct connection to the Leonardo da Vinci airport in Fiumicino. In Roma Termini you will also find the terminuses of trams, trolleybuses and of many urban buses. It is also the place where the underground lines A and B cross paths.
The Casa Italo and Le Frecce rooms, found inside the station, are open respectively to all Italo and Trenitalia passengers and provides a welcoming reception, Wi-Fi, electric sockets for electronic devices, sofas and places to sit while waiting and informative displays with information about departures and arrivals of trains. In the Freccia Club of Trenitalia and Italo Club of NTV lounges access is granted only to certain categories of passengers.
You will find services for travellers, tourists and citizens, shopping proposals, restaurants and fast food for all sorts of needs in the Terrazza Termini (upper level), central gallery and in the Termini Forum, the underground level of the station.

Roma Tiburtina is the second biggest train station in Rome and it is located in the North-East area of the city. It is the Italian high-speed hub.
You can reach the station with line B of the underground, getting off at Tiburtina.
The big pedestrian gallery, a big enclosed urban boulevard, built on the base of the railway, is a large area filled with commercial activities which are open every day from 08:00 a.m. to 08:00 p.m. and restaurants which guarantee services from 05:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
The regional railway line FL1 (Orte – Fara Sabina – Roma – Fiumicino) passes by Roma Tiburtina and it connects it to Leonardo da Vinci airport in Fiumicino.

The terminus of many urban buses managed by ATAC is outside the station and, in the adjacent square, you can find the Tibus bus station, the stop for arrival and departures of medium and long distance lines, both for Italian and international destinations.

Roma Ostiense is the third most important train station in the capital and is located in the Ostiense area.
It represents an intermodal citizen link thanks to its many connections with other railways, tube stations, buses and taxies.
FL1 regional railway lines (Orte – Fara Sabina – Roma – Fiumicino) pass by here and they are linked to the Fiumicino airport, FL3 (Roma – Cesano – Viterbo) and FL5 (Roma – Civitavecchia – Pisa).
An underground passage connects the station to the Piramide stop of line B of the underground.
The main entrance to the building is on Piazzale dei Partigiani where there is also an underground parking lot. There is an overground one too in Piazzale 12 Ottobre 1942, located on the opposite side of the binaries.

Roma Trastevere is situated at Piazza Flavio Biondo, southwest of the city centre. It is at the southern end of the Trastevere district, close to the districts of Marconi and Portuense.
The regional trains FL1 (Orte – Fiumicino airport), FL3 (Roma Tiburtina – Viterbo) and FL5 (Roma Termini – Civitavecchia) all pass through the station.
Outside the station you will find the bus terminus which provides several lines to move in and out of Rome and Tram #8 which will take you to Piazza Venezia. Tram #8’s stop at “Arenula/Cairoli” is useful for whoever needs to reach the areas of Campo de Fiori, Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, because they are close by.
