Piazza del Campidoglio is the smallest Roman hill. It was an excellent spot for protection, which was its purpose ever since the most ancient times.

The square was restructured by Michelangelo during the Renaissance. He gave it a trapezoidal shape and positioned the Senator’s palace in the background. This palace has a double ramp staircase, delimited by two buildings: the Palazzo dei Conservatori and the so-called Palazzo Nuovo, which today is a museum.

The copy of the equestrian statue of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the symbol of imperial authority, stands in the centre of the square. Today, the original version of this statue is kept in the Palazzo dei Conservatori.

The Capitol is also a beautiful panoramic spot where you can have a magnificent view of the Roman Forum. You won’t find this unique scenery anywhere else in the world.
