Project Description

Piazza della Repubblica

Piazza della Repubblica is located in front of the Diocletian Baths, close to the train station Roma Termini and to the Opera Theatre.

The porticos, which give such beauty to the square, were built in 1887 in memory of the ancient buildings that once stood there.

The Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs overlooks this square and it was built, with the help of Michelangelo, inside a part of the imperial Roman baths.

The Fountain of the Naiadi, built in 1901, is in the centre of the square.

In 17, Via XX Settembre, not too far from the square, there is the Baroque church of Santa Maria Della Vittoria; the main attraction here is the spectacular sculpture in marble and golden bronze of the Transverberation or Ecstasy of Saint Teresa of Avila. It’s considered unanimously if not the most, one of the best, statuesque masterpieces by Bernini.
